We NEED YOUR HELP ------ And, Our second Buddy Tuesday!

Hello Lowell Families!
We are beginning our book fair Sunday, December 4th.
In order to make this as good as it can be, we REALLY need your help on this day. Even if you can only volunteer an hour, you would really be helping us out. This drive raised THOUSANDS of dollars last year. Our library would not be as wonderful as it is without it!

We brought our buddies back together and had a LOT of fun.  Our buddies discussed what it meant to be kind.  They talked about ways that they could show kindness in school, at home, and out in public.  It was very nice to see them work so cooperatively.

Please see below for pictures:

We are thankful for so many reasons.
We are thankful for our diversity.
We are thankful that our community acts with integrity.
We are thankful that our students cooperate.
We are thankful that our students persevere.
We are thankful that our students are kind.
Happy Thanksgiving!

First Grade has a Thankful Feast! - REMINDER DISMISSAL ON WEDNESDAY IS AT 12PM

What a fun event!

With the help of our wonderful teachers and parent volunteers, we just had one of the coolest hands-on learning events I have ever seen.  We took sweet potatoes from our community garden (and some from the grocery store) and peeled them, mashed them, made pancakes out of them.  We had students shaking heavy cream like crazy to turn it into butter.  We had students on the griddle flipping their own pancakes.  WHAT A FUN COMMUNITY EVENT!

Special thanks to our first grade team: Tony Fiandaca, Amy Peca, Lauryn Richardson, Christine Talamas, Noreen Cassidy, Joanne Herrero, Jacqui Tresca, and Stacy Vachon for facilitating such an innovative, engaging, interactive event.

Cirque' Dreams Holidaze Visits the Lowell School

We had a very exciting end to our Friday at the Lowell School.

Cirque Dreams Holidaze, a show in Boston, gave a part of their afternoon to come visit our school. Special thanks to John Vitti, a fantastic community member that volunteers countless hours to Watertown Public Schools every week.  He helped to put this together in less than a week.

Our kids had the chance to see the act, ask some very impressive questions, and their behavior was exemplary.  I was so impressed with how well we acted.  So, hopefully that helps make your weekend as it certainly made mine.

Have a great one,
Phil Oates

Successful ALICE Drills at the Lowell on Monday afternoon ---- Half Day on 11/15: Dismissal at 12:15pm ----- Other Half Days to add to your calendar

Watertown's Finest joined the Lowell School to complete our ALICE drills.  We spent a lot of time training and prepping the staff.  We had one on one sessions with some of our teachers and Watertown Police officers on how to best keep their room safe in an emergency.  We went through today like a well-oiled machine.  The students really stepped up, took the drills seriously, and made the best, safe decisions that they were trained to make.  Our teachers were amazing leaders today. You should be proud of our students and teachers.  I know I am.

I also want to just remind you on here that there is a half day on 11/15 for parent conferences.  Students will be dismissed at 12:15pm and there WILL BE LEDP.

Upcoming half days: 11/15, 11/23, 11/30, 12/19, 1/25

Thanks and have a great day,
Phil Oates

Garden Cleanup and Preparing for Election Day

Thanks to this amazing group of people from the Lowell community that gave up a couple hours of their Sunday to prepare our garden for the winter months.  It is days like this that make the Lowell great!  We even had some impressive leaf pile jumping.

Above, you will see our entire fourth grade being taught a lesson on the electoral college by Tom Stezzi.  This has been an extremely engaging election for the students.  We did a mock election of dog versus cat.  Dog won in a landslide.  Always great to have these teachable moments that relate to the real world.  I heard very interesting and engaging lessons all over the school as we have led up to Election Day.
