Welcome Wall

Welcome Wall

posted Sep 8, 2016, 10:44 AM by Philip Oates

Hello Lowell community,
As all of our students enter today, they will walk by our brand new welcome wall, represented by the 27(!!!) languages that are represented in our school. It's days like today that we should take a moment to be thankful for the diversity in which we raise our children. It's going to be a great year!!!
Special thanks to the Miller family, Moylan family, Rizzo family, and Hackett family for contributing to create this wonderful project.

New Traffic Patterns

Hi everyone,

As we prepare for the new school year, I need to send out a logistical message in terms of traffic from the Watertown Police. Please see below, as the traffic patterns will be affected.
(New this year) – Beginning Wednesday September 7, 2016 vehicles will be restricted from traveling south on George Street from Channing Road. All vehicles wishing to approach the school from this area should continue on Channing Road to Fuller Road. Custodians will place an in-street Do Not Enter sign on George Street at Channing Road to prevent vehicles from traveling south on George Street between the hours of 7:00 am and 3:30 pm when school is in session.

(Reminder) – Please adhere to all Do Not Enter signs on the streets surrounding the school. These restrictions are in place to assist traffic flow and increase safety for students and families walking to and from school.

(Reminder) – Please remember that the purpose of the area in front of the main entrance is for “drop and go” only. Please pull to the curb and as far forward as possible. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, please have your student exit the vehicle on the passenger side so that he/she is not stepping out into oncoming traffic. Please do not double park or stop in the middle of the roadway to pick-up or drop-off. Once you have picked up or dropped off, please exit the area safely and promptly. Cooperation in this area will allow students to arrive safely and on-time.

Looking forward to meeting your wonderful children tomorrow,
Phil Oates

Buddy Benches are Coming

Buddy Benches Are Coming

August 22, 2016 7:37AM

Hello Lowell Community,

I have some exciting news to share.  I approached Maria Hinkson, representing a group of parents that were close with Bob Galante, with the idea of buying a buddy bench in his name.  She said that she was all for it, and created a tremendously successful fundraising effort to bring in OVER $3000!  This will more than cover two buddy benches for the Lowell (one for each playground) and a few more to be spread out throughout the Watertown community.  These benches will be ordered today for the Lowell School, and hopefully get installed by the end of September.  Special thanks to Nikki Muraca for doing some behind the scenes work (and sending the article below) with the Recreation Department and the DPW who have both been very helpful throughout the entire process.

To read more on the positive effects of buddy benches, please read:

This is what being a school community is all about.  Thank you so much to those of you that have donated and helped.  This will be great for our schools.

Lego WeDO's!

July 27, 2016 8:41 AM
Hello Lowell Families,

I have exciting news to share.  Toni Carlson, our Educational Technology Coordinator, was able to get a full classroom set of Lego WeDo 2.0 (https://education.lego.com/en-us/products/wedo-2-0-core-set-software-and-get-started-project/45300).  This is not the Legos we grew up with!  This tool aligns with the district STEAM initiative, as it combines robotics with computer programming.  Our new Math/Science Elementary coordinator, Elizabeth Kaplan is excited to install it into our new science curriculum.  It doesn’t get much cooler than this.  Here is a video that demonstrates its capabilities: https://education.lego.com/en-us/lesi?gclid=CJWzyvm5kMoCFY9gfgodrZED8Q

Looking forward to playing with these myself.

Pre-K/K Play Date

July 22, 2016 7:15 AM
Attention incoming Pre-K and Kindergarten Families:

This coming Thursday, July 28, we will be having a Play Date for all incoming families going into Pre-K and Kindergarten.

This is a fantastic way to enter the Lowell community and get to know other parents.  Additionally, it can be a great chance

for your children to get to know some of their classmates before the year gets started.  If you can make it, we would love to have you.

As new events arise, they will also be added to the Google Calendar associated with the school website.  Please subscribe to the calendar to have updates automatically added to yours.

Enjoy the rest of the summer,
Phil Oates

Introduction to Mr. Oates

July 21, 2016 12:33 PM

Dear Lowell Families,

As I finish settling into my office, I wanted to reach out to you to introduce myself as the new Interim Principal at the Lowell School.  I was born and raised in Watertown, went through Watertown Public Schools, and then went off to study Mathematics at Tufts University.  I’ve received Masters of Education degrees from UMASS Boston and EDCO Leadership Institute.  After a two-year stint in Cambridge Public Schools, I have been teaching and coaching in Watertown for the past 8 years.  I am thrilled to move into this school leadership position within the district that I love so much.

I am truly honored to be back at the school that I attended 23 years ago.  I promise to work tirelessly to keep the Lowell School on this fantastic path that Ms. Kaplan and these tremendous educators have helped to create.  You are important stakeholders in this community, and I want you be as involved as you can be to make this school even better.  My door is always open to meet with you; please email me at: Philip.oates@watertown.k12.ma.us if you would like to sit down and talk.  There has been much accomplished already as we prepare for the 2016-2017 school year, and we are all excited for another successful start.

Looking forward to working with you and your children,

Phil Oates
